Risk of electricity shortage – The UDC makes the energy file an “absolute priority”
According to the party, if commitments are not made in favor of energy supply, the dossier should be withdrawn from Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga.
The SVP makes security of energy supply a “top priority”. If Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga does not make a commitment to ensure it, the file should be withdrawn from her, threatens the party.
The SVP calls on the head of the Federal Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) to recognize the failure of the 2050 energy strategy and to guarantee the energy supply. "If Simonetta Sommaruga refuses to materialize this commitment, the file must be withdrawn from her", declared the president of the party during the presentation Monday in Bern of her position.
An “emergency stove policy”: this is how Marco Chiesa describes the energy policy of the Minister for Energy. Criticizing “dangerous ideological experiments” by the left and the Greens, the SVP's position paper “For a secure, environmentally friendly and affordable energy supply” calls for a change of course.

A “reliable pillar”
Faced with the risk of impending electricity shortages, the SVP wants to bet on hydroelectric and nuclear energy as “reliable pillars” of supply to Switzerland. “The life of existing climate-friendly nuclear power plants must be extended. In addition, new nuclear power plants of the latest generation must be built, ”demands the party.
As for construction and concession projects in the field of renewable energies (wind energy, biogas installations, hydraulic energy), the UDC denounces their torpedoing. To avoid this, it requires adapting the legal bases.
Switzerland can no longer rely on energy imports from neighboring countries or the European Union, insists the SVP. And the initiatives on the glaciers, on biodiversity or for the landscape threaten even more the security of supply, affirmed the representatives of the party.
Especially in winter, the fluctuating sources of wind and solar are of little use. For National Councilor Christian Imark (SO) we cannot avoid gas-fired power stations. But "it's hard to reconcile with climate policy," he noted.
No new taxes
Finally, there is no question of introducing new fees or taxes that will increase the cost of electricity production. "Because it is the taxpayers, especially SMEs, who pay the bill," recalled the UDC.
The Federal Council intends to increase the production of electricity from renewable energies by revising the law on energy and the law on electricity supply. He delivered his message to Parliament this summer. It also talks about improving the electricity supply in winter.
