Green electricity: Switzerland would not have what to boast
Sciences & Climat | COP26| Radarpar Rachel Barbara Häubi
Green electricity in Switzerland would be less exemplary than what popular opinion would think of it.This is at least what a recent data analysis suggests, carried out by our colleagues of time.Forty-two countries, a fifth of the world states would thus have recourse to electricity of green origin than Switzerland.
Why is it important.Energy is the flagship subject of negotiations this Thursday at COP26 in Glasgow. With transport and heating, electricity is one of the three components of total energy production. In response to the energy transition, electrification is increasingly perceived as the key to decarbonizing our societies.Global electricity demand for electric vehicles should thus multiply by five to eleven by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency.

Faced with this all-electric boom, a carbon neutral energy source is essential to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement. However, this is still far from the case: in 2020, more than 60% of world electricity still came from the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), against 39% for nuclear andrenewable energies (hydroelectricity, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal energy).Another observation: if the development of renewable energies has soamed over the past ten years, the share of electricity of fossil origin has not been shaken.
