Ghana: eight solar power plants will be installed in the north of the country
(Ecofin agency) - Bui Power Authority, the public body in charge of managing the Bui hydroelectric dam has undertaken to support the development of renewable energies in Ghana. In this context, she hopes to operate at least 700 MW of solar energy by 2024.
Bui Power Authority (BPA) plans to build eight solar power plants in northern Ghana. The sites selected for the project include Yendi, in the North, Buipe and Sawla, in the Savanes or Zebilla and Bolgatanga, in the Haut Ghana region Eastern. The project will start in the first quarter of 2022.
The sites selected for the project are close to the substations of Ghana Grid Company (Gridco) in the north of the country.According to the director general of BPA, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, the potential capacity of solar power plants in this region will depend on the size and specifications of investors who have committed to finance the construction of infrastructure.
BPA also collaborates with universities, including the University of renewable energies of Sunyani in the Bono region, in order to involve young graduates in various projects.
Currently, BPA develops several renewable energy projects in the country, including a 404 MW hydroelectric power station, a 250 MW land power plant as well as floating solar power plants of 1 MW and 5 MW.These projects also include a 45 kW hydroelectric microcentral in Tsatsadu.
BPA plans to exploit Western Rivers in Ghana to increase their floating solar energy production capacity.
