How to choose the right tank bag
Selection criteria, capacity, expandable or not, fixing method, point to check... tank bag buying guide
Which tank bag to choose according to your budget and use
For the most worried or for the most organized, if there is an ideal place to transport something on a motorcycle, it is under your eyes and in front of you. The tank bag is also a particularly practical solution for having the essentials that you want to keep on hand, as well as moderate weight effects, whether for everyday use or for going on a trip. And above all, it is often a simpler solution to set up and less expensive than saddlebags or a top-case, not always aesthetic.
What are the different types of tank bag, the fixing systems, their capacity and their possibilities of extension, their properties and above all the points to be wary of? Here is our guide to the tank bag to choose the right model according to your needs.
Preamble
It is a universal rule, everything that is good and good can become bad and unpleasant if it is badly chosen or badly used. This is particularly the case with the tank bag. Too high, it can considerably obstruct the view, the movements and make any journey a hell. Too heavy, it can move, modify driving and induce disturbing or even dangerous phenomena. However, well sized, well loaded and above all well fixed, it is a particularly attractive piece of travel equipment.
If in the past there were mainly two types of tank bags: magnetic bags and bags to be fixed on a tank mat, the material has evolved enormously to suit all types of use and especially all types of content. Whether you want to carry a credit card, a reasonably sized pet or take advantage of a road map, an old-fashioned itinerary (yes, yes, it still exists) or a GPS, there is solutions !
Selection criteria
The motorbike
Whether it's a roadster, sports car, cruiser or custom, not every tank bag fits every motorcycle. If only on many customs, the external tank cap can interfere with the positioning of a bag above.
The brand
Many brands of luggage are available on the French market, which can be found in accessories stores and on online sales sites. We particularly know the historical specialist with Bagster, the historical and French brand, as its name does not indicate. The luggage specialists Shad and Givi are also references in the field, through a very wide range, as well as Kappa, less known. More recent, SW-Motech, among others, offers original ideas with vintage style in particular and above all of quality compared to other brands. Then there are all the own brands like DXR, the Motoblouz brand, or All-One at Dafy or Vanucci at Louis, which give pride of place to products with an attractive price-quality ratio. Finally, because we have to talk about it, we find sites such as Wish or Ali Express offer great prices, sometimes for copies or interpretations of luggage, but you never know what you're really going to have or how many time it will last. A bit like snow (note that the Wish platform has been condemned in France by the DGCCRF and has been removed from search engines in particular).
Practicality
Whatever your choice, don't forget that if you are going for several hundred kilometers and have a reasonable range or have not filled up before charging, you must access the fuel cap... And some models once fixed require a real gymnastics then to access the cap.
The specialization to answer all your problems.
The right question often needs to be asked: "What do I want to do with my tank bag?" »
To travel ? In this case, a large volume of at least 30 liters seems necessary, as well as the possibility of placing a map or a navigation device in an upper translucent compartment (if you do not have a dedicated support).
Do you just want to carry around a few things occasionally? An intermediate size (approximately 20 L or even less) could be sufficient. Do you want to use your bag daily, to work or to go to work? You will then need robust, all-weather equipment with the ideal attachment to the tank (mechanical for example).
Would you like to take your dog or cat out on the trail? Or do you just want an empty pocket, a smartphone holder, or something to leave your papers and your wallet? It is sometimes better to invest in several materials, dedicated to a particular function. Be that as it may, quality takes precedence, which will allow it to preserve its contents from the vagaries of the weather and above all to age well. Choosing a bag that perfectly meets the defined need, rather than choosing a less efficient Swiss army knife is the very basis of your thinking.
Identify your need
Figure out what you absolutely need in terms of features. Waterproof or not waterproof, stretchy just in case, or rigid anyway? With a Card/GPS/smartphone reader or with an opening to let your pet breathe? Depending on the type of binding, you can choose a model or a range of models. Indeed, not all bags lend themselves to any type of installation on the tank of a motorcycle. Depending on its shape, its material (plastic, metal or a mix of the two), the category of the motorcycle, there are suitable and efficient materials. Therefore, one can benefit from an autonomous tank bag that attaches alone to the tank, or from a bag using a physical anchor to be placed on it.
What type of binding?
If there are bags with powerful magnets to hold on metal tanks, more and more motorcycles have tank covers partially or totally made of plastic. It is therefore impossible to rely on magnetic power. In this case, it is advisable to resort to the treasures of ingenuity of the designers of motorcycle luggage! Thus, many accessories manufacturers offer proprietary "soles" (and therefore incompatible with other brands, etc.) to be fixed around the edge of the tank cap, or even mats/harnesses to be strapped and fixed to the tank. .
Magnetic. The bag is generally provided with powerful magnets under its bottom, magnets which can be accompanied by external magnets to be fixed on the tank (example of the IXS bag below). The power and the number of magnets are a key point to check and to put in corollary with the shape of the tank. Note that magnetic bags can be dangerous, not for the waves emitted (there are none) but for their ability to recover all the small scrap metal, which then ends up on the tank and irreparably scratches your tank if you have not thoroughly cleaned said bag beforehand. A tank cover avoids this problem.
Mechanical. "Universal" attachment systems complete the field of possibilities. They are not universal for the luggage they carry, but for the type and brand of motorcycle on which they can be attached. Kind of straps provided with an attachment point for the bag (therefore pay attention to the bag/support compatibility), they are less encompassing and less protective than the tank mats, therefore more discreet and easier to assemble/disassemble. Whatever.
The classic tank cover, in fact, is specific to a motorcycle model, covering the precious fuel container entirely and very precisely. It has a color and pattern approaching the original decoration of the tank, which it also protects against external attacks. Expensive, with sometimes relative aesthetics (even downright ugly), the tank cover made the heyday of Bagster and holds up well with the rollers, even if it has lost its aura and its interest over the years. years… And this famous tank cover can also fulfill another function, such as that of accommodating other accessories such as passenger handles!
This is why we find today, especially at Bagster, "Tank Panels", a kind of wide straps all in length to be simply fixed. But again, the models are specific to each motorcycle or type of motorcycles (depending on the location of the fuel cap). Whatever your choice, the devices are associated with specific luggage, equipped with a compatible sole or special hooks.
Security
Safety first. Do not forget to favor the devices putting you in safety. On the basic models, magnetic or with suction cups (they are rare), the retaining straps found on most models are not there to do the trick, but rather to hold your luggage in case of problem. There is often a safety "belt" to be hung around the steering column, without interfering with the rotation of the handlebars or bracelets.
A good side grip is also essential, so that the bag does not turn on the tank and does not slide along its sides. This will cause an imbalance or the impossibility of turning. We do not tell you that this happens often, but the more we are greedy in loading, the more we are exposed to this kind of inconvenience and the more we must counter it. Don't worry, it takes a hell of a lot to go about it to be confronted with this kind of problem.
If you have a one-time need for a bag and carry a reasonable weight on a limited surface and therefore a limited volume, a fixing sole is to be preferred. It allows you to quickly put on and remove a bag in one click and keep it perfectly in place without any other artifice.
Pay attention to the height, depending on your height and the type of motorcycle
Due to the variable height and the possibility of increasing the volume of certain tank bags, we often forget that we then have to drive with a real suitcase between our arms or even… in front of our eyes. Certain configurations can thus hide the on-board instrumentation of your motorcycle and make any trip stressful. Similarly, a tank bag that is too roomy can prevent you from leaning correctly over the tank, placing your arms correctly and depriving you of some of the maneuvers and appreciable comfort, especially on sports cars.
For this type of motorcycle luggage, it is therefore advisable to remain modest, despite the temptation to "load the mule". At least, depending on the kind of motorcycle you drive. Indeed, even if they are able to hold up well, the “frontal” saddlebags modify the wind resistance (mainly on roadsters) and can return “full the quiche”. If some veterans use it as a pillow on long journeys, we prefer to dedicate this privileged location to the essentials, but it is always possible to pack and take a lot.
Sealing
Sealing, a point to watch out for. It's not just about carrying something, everything has to be protected, especially from water. If you are a frequent traveler and above all travel in all weathers, check the tightness of your bag. This can be native (we often talk about the IPX5 standard which is actually waterproof), by means of technical fabrics and waterproof closures (which have trouble holding up over time over time), or quite simply provided by a hood-style cover to be put in place at the first drops of water. The ideal is therefore to have a compartment dedicated to the transport of the rain protection, in order to always have it on you. As they say, prevention is better than cure.
The other possibility is of course to put airtight bags in the panniers. Zipped bags, preferably. Up to you. However, it is possible to opt for a material that is natively waterproof or treated with waterproofing, adorned with zippers that are themselves waterproof or provided with an anti-rain reverse.
Transporting a pet. As we mentioned, it is possible to use the tank bag to keep your pet in sight and let it enjoy the view. It's rare, but the manufacturers have planned for it. Finally had foreseen it. Once again Bagster for example with the Puppy model. However, keep in mind that cats and dogs do not know how to moisturize their eyes.
Carrying the bag itself
Carry your bag. And once at destination? Find out about any transport devices implemented on the bag. It's not all about charging, you still have to be able to walk around with it once you arrive. There are tank bags equipped with a handle (or several) and a shoulder strap perhaps a plus. They are found on all sizes of saddlebags, from the most rikiki to the most beefy. The must for the bulkiest luggage? These two elements plus straps to transform a bag of good capacity into a backpack. Think about it.
And now, if we looked at all this in detail?
The magnetic tank bag
What type of tank?
A metal tank. Necessarily. This type of tank is the one that accepts the most luggage, supports and which served as the basis for the development of the tank bag. As a result, we can use magnets, straps, dressing without it being annoying. The magnets can be attached to the bag or external and provided with a hanging system (often of the satchel type).
What price?
From €20, less if you opt for a chinoiserie… with the risks that entails. For this price, we have a small bag, but sometimes a good capacity. A first prize, certainly, but the function is there, if one considers occasional use.
What capacity?
Below the liter and up to forty liters.
What material?
Textile, for the most part, synthetic for cost reasons, the tank bag can also be made of leather or mix elements. A waterproof treated natural leather can be found, but the price flies away, just to stick to the cafe racer or vintage image. Leather is durable, but it takes time to dry out, if at all, so synthetic leather is better for all-season riders. There are also bags made of natural textiles, especially cotton. Do you like the military or trendy style? Unless the vintage and coated cotton barbour spirit, in order to maintain a relative waterproofness and a vintage look. Finally, there are now magnetic tank bags in the duffel bag style. Waterproof, modular, they are particularly attractive, even if their price remains high.
Soft or stiff?
The "classic" magnetic tank bag is a type of motorcycle luggage offering great modularity. There are a large number of representatives, whose shape remains the size of a tank, just to stick to its support, both literally and figuratively.
The capacity of the magnetic bag varies on average between 1 and 40 liters (therefore 20 liters on average). This carrying capacity can be adapted by means of additional floors to be grafted or of ease bellows to be released. In the case of the "tiers", you can opt for a particular functionality, such as a card holder or an additional bag to be zipped onto the main element. Some models even offer self-contained magnetic stages. Class, as they say. Modularity is a plus, but watch out for the overall height, which can quickly become a problem.
Flexible, the magnetic tank luggage therefore conceals many tricks and great modularity. It is preferred for transporting clothes or even complex-shaped loads. Especially since the adaptation to the shape of the tank is easier.
Rigid, the magnetic tank bag is often dedicated to a single task and of very reasonable size. In return, it holds perfectly in place and takes care of its content or what is attached to it. Indeed, we can consider in this form a support for mobile phone or GPS favoring navigation and below, a compartment where to leave his papers and a credit card for example. Ideal for not deforming your pockets and having everything under your eyes as well as to hand.
A fundamental question. Expandable, modular for some and in permanent contact with the tank over a large part of its surface, the magnetic tank bag must have a non-slip outer bottom (the one in contact with the tank) to keep it in place and thick enough to be able to absorb some of the small shocks induced by loading. Especially if it contains hard and fairly heavy elements. It would be a shame to dent his tank!
Pay attention to the contents of the bag. In a flexible magnetic bag, the base is more easily deformed. As a result, a semi-rigid interior bottom and above all a relevant organization limit the risks. They allow you to drive more serenely, even if you have a fairly round tank. Don't forget that you take bumps and it moves in there! If necessary, it is therefore advisable to put a thickness of slack at the bottom (clothing), the heaviest and most rigid in the middle (accessories) and the rest above. Just sit the bag well, let it take the shape of its support and prevent the contents from moving once en route.
Magnetic bag: favor a good distribution of magnets and high-power magnets. Strong and well-placed magnets are essential, so as not to lose your load en route. In particular under the effect of the air pressure, therefore with the speed, following a strong acceleration or even heavy braking. These magnets must be positioned intelligently on the bag. There are usually one or two on the front, two or three on each side and one or two on the back. They can be integrated or offset, in order to offer even more hold.
The most relevant voluminous saddlebags take into account the deformation of the bottom induced by the load. As a result, more or less encompassing flap-type sides are part of the main body of the bag. They increase its seat width and therefore the force of holding in place. On the other hand, be careful not to get your fingers caught between the handlebars and the magnets if the handlebars (often strap) come close to the tank when you turn fully. On sports cars and sports touring cars, opt for smaller luggage or quite simply another type of support, mechanical this time.
Maintain the surface in contact with the tank. When it comes to magnetic saddlebags, shape matters as much as substance, so to speak. Check before putting it on the varnish of its tank and before each installation that the base of the bag is not loaded with filings, abrasive dust or dirt, especially if it has been placed on the ground. The penalty would be visible, with more or less pronounced paint wear, scratches, in short, deterioration.
The alternatives. If you appreciate rigid luggage, you will find many representatives from manufacturers with a proprietary attachment system using a sole, studs, arch, ring to be grafted around the edge of the fuel cap. The advantage of this range of saddlebags is to be almost levitated above the tank and therefore to limit any risk of scratching or damaging it. Disadvantage ? The maximum capacity is often lower than that of a soft bag and the sorting of the contents stricter. In particular because of a rigid bottom too. We look at this together.
The tank bag with hanging system
What type of tank?
A non-metallic tank, made of plastic or a mixture of the two materials. The attachment device becomes the reception base on which a bag is grafted.
What price?
From €40 per bag. The fixing system can be extra, whether it is a sole, a mat or a harness. The price can vary between 15 and 30 € depending on its type and quality. Why offer them individually? To be able to equip one or more other motorcycles.
Also count more than 130 € if the support of your luggage is a tank cover.
The studs to be screwed onto the nuts of the tank flap or the sole are all economical and practical means used to retain the bag. There are also suction cups, less reassuring, but sufficient for troubleshooting, especially if the surface of the tank allows them to be fixed there without difficulty (paint, shape).
What capacity?
Up to thirty liters, or even a little more. Saddlebags with a hooking system vary greatly in size and volume. Often specialized, they are generally robust, but also take up space once removed, where the soft luggage can be folded up or at least “packed”.
More than the capacity matters the shape, which can also be limiting depending on what you want to carry. Here again, several models can be considered to meet all types of needs.
Soft or stiff?
Rigid ! The tank bag hanging on a sole is by definition made of textile, but rigid in its structure in order to offer a hard bottom and walls that do not deform. Often dedicated to a single task and of very reasonable size, it does not deform, while being able to be "extended" by means of bellows or floors to be added.
A sole to choose well for it to work
Rest assured, there is no wrong horse in the choice of technology to implement on the bike. What will guide your choice are none other than the luggage and the range offered by each manufacturer. Depending on the use you want to have and the price you can put on it and the importance you attribute to style. All that remains is to leaf through the online catalogs of props!
Questions to ask?
Conclusion
The multiplication of types, shapes, capacities, functionalities and who knows what else tank bags show how much this device is appreciated and practical, in addition to being relatively economical. For heavy riders planning long stages, it is worth thinking about refueling, but for the rest, you can rely on this type of luggage, the price of which knows how to remain reasonable and accessible for optimal functionality. The only real limit: the volume of transport and the risk, sometimes, of wearing out or damaging (in the long run or on impact) the tank in the event of misuse or too heavy loading. At least if you have not opted for a hanging bag.
