Toulouse: how the city strengthens its arsenal of video protection ·Global Voices
Security, Toulouse, Haute-Garonne published on, updated
The city of Toulouse will install ten 4G and 5G video protection cameras at sensitive points in the city. Faster and cheaper installations than conventional cameras.
The city of Toulouse will diversify its video protection arsenal in the face of problems of uncivil character and delinquency. The network of 454 fixed cameras, installed since 2014 by Jean-Luc Moudenc's team, will house ten «mobile »cameras. The housing itself will be the same as a fixed camera, but it is the connector that will change. For a fixed camera, you need to pull the fibre and the power grid, and often install a mast.
Cameras easier to install and move, and three times cheaper than fixed cameras
Administrative procedures can take several weeks, and so can the work. For the so-called "mobile" cameras, the images will be transmitted via 4G and 5G networks, directly to the video PC of the municipal police. The installation will therefore take a few days. No heavy connections will be required. The cameras can be placed on an existing mast, public equipment. And these cameras can also be removed and placed in another street, another neighbourhood, as needed. Another difference between the two, and not the least, is the cost. A classic camera costs on average €30,000, compared with just €10,900 for a "light" camera, to which must be added the annual subscription to the 4G network.
A first known location in the eastern districts of Toulouse
An initial location of these cameras is known. It will be Marius Pinel square, in the Bonhoure-Guilheméry district, near the Pinel Park of Bonhure Elementary School and the lay circle Jean-Chaubet. Local residents and the municipal police observed regrouping and even dealing, causing disturbances in the neighbourhood. The installation will be effective by the end of September 2021. "Â this is typically a case in which this type of camera can be useful. 4G or 5G technology exists, it has proven itself, there is no reason to avoid it, "explains Emilion Esnault, deputy mayor of Toulouse in charge of security. "we note that the issue of cameras now transcends political divides. Left-wing mayors, in particular that of Cugnaux, who belongs to the same political movement as the former mayor of Toulouse (generation. Jean-Luc Moudenc, Mayor of Toulouse, said during the assessment of his first year as mayor in the neighborhoods, on 8 July, "we have joined us on this issue", said Jean-Luc Moudenc, Mayor of Toulouse, during the review of his first year of office as mayor in the neighborhoods on 8 July.
More than one hundred new fixed and mobile cameras by 2026
The municipality will not stop there, as it has planned to install some 100 new cameras during the mandate. Some 30 have already been completed in 2020 and 2021. "we have started a consultation with local police, local residents and local mayors to refine the needs," concludes Emilion Esnault. We are prioritizing needs, and we will continue to deploy the cameras in the coming months. "
