Six surveillance cameras for 540 inhabitants, in the Aude this mayor who wants to monitor and charge the authors of incivility
The mayor of Sainte-Eulalie in Aude decided to install six surveillance cameras in the town last December to combat incivility.A measure rather well accepted by the inhabitants.
A camera for barely 85 inhabitants. This is the incredible ratio of the town of Sainte-Eulalie.But by going around the village, the mayor naturally justifies this choice: "Here you are on the playground of the town which was vandalized during the summer", shows Jean-Paul Pouzens."We are in the process of redoing it, it was a slide, and there a swing."From this equipment there is only a bunch of pieces of wood, the games have been completely destroyed. This damage has a cost: 6.Euros.

In response, the mayor of Sainte-Eulalie had six video surveillance cameras installed in the town.An effective way to protect public buildings from incivility, such as the playground, the church or the town hall."It is not video surveillance properly speaking since we protect and monitors our public buildings", specifies the mayor."We do not watch the streets, but what we build, we do not degrade them to us and especially if we degrade them, that we can put a name on them to re -referent them.»
Tools rather well accepted by the inhabitants
These surveillance cameras were rented to a leasing company. They cost the municipality for 200 euros per month.
An installation rather well received by the inhabitants of this town of 540 inhabitants. “C’est une excellente initiative qui apporte de la sécurité à tout le monde et qui permet à la mairie de vérifier certaines incivilités» se réjouit un habitant. But some young people are more reserved: "I think the installation of these cameras is useless. It represents a certain cost and young people would prefer to have a room for them or something that would bring more to the village rather than cameras that are useless.»
In the Aude, video surveillance is on the rise.In Pezens, the neighboring town, the mayor had 78 cameras installed and others are expected. The cost of the operation amounts to nearly 600.Euros.
