Sixteen new surveillance cameras will soon be added to the fourteen already in place in Rochefort. Their invaluable help in investigations pushed the city to invest more.
The fourteen cameras in the city of Rochefort (two of which allow vehicle license plates to be recognized) are currently distributed between the police station and the library in the lower part of the city. Their number will soon increase to thirty. The city's objective is to extend the coverage area and fill in blind spots, explains Pierre Jacobs, divisional commissioner for the Lesse and Lhomme police area:
The city has decided to increase their number because the first cameras installed have, it seems, proven themselves. They have not particularly made it possible to reduce the number of petty crimes in the street but show their usefulness in the context of investigations. They make it possible to find suspects or clues.
A supervised use
The use of cameras is monitored by data protection organizations such as the COC, the police information control body. The images are not permanently viewed, as explained by Marc Mathieu, data protection officer for the Lesse and Lhomme police zone:
The new cameras are expected in the next few weeks. The total amount of the investment is estimated at 95,000 euros.
