Google has filed an original patent to hide a Selfie camera under the screen of its next smartphones.
In an effort to increase the surface area of smartphone screens all manufacturers are looking for a way to make the selfie camera disappear under the screen.
Google, Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo and many others compete with ingenuity to do so. The Letsgodigital website has recovered a patent filed by the Cupertino firm to hide this camera.
The 24-page document describes all the mechanics imagined by Google engineers. The smartphone uses an OLED slab.
Camera under the screen-Google finds a solution
A kind of reflective prism is placed under the slab. On one side there is the Selfie camera and on the other there is a second one. When the prism rotates to the left it lets the camera appear through the screen. It is therefore visible and usable. It does not measure more than 2 to 3 mm.
When it tilts to the right, it returns the image from the auxiliary screen to hide the camera. This small OLED screen can also contain ambient or proximity sensors.
Unlike some patents, Google's system seems realistic and achievable in the near future. The Pixel 6 will certainly not be the smartphone that will benefit, but we can hope for the Pixel 7 in 2022.
Samsung could take everyone's speed. Expected at the end of the year the Galaxy Z fold 3 should be the first smartphone of the brand with a camera under the screen.
