9Interview // How does Dell address the market for professional laptops today? To find out more, digital was able to meet directly with French representatives of the US manufacturer.
The acceleration of the digital transformation of the professional world can lead companies to review their laptop parks.Between offices and home, employees are - a priori - more mobile than ever and have performance, audiovisual quality or storage needs much more marked than before. In parallel, directors of information systems must also strengthen their cybersecurity. So how do you choose a laptops park for your VSE, SME, ETI or big business?Numériques has surveyed various manufacturers to help companies make their choice and take stock of their professional laptops offers, their approaches to this market segment, and how they adapt to the new needs of professionals. After Lenovo, we go to Dell with Kristel Delnesse, head of France's product managers on company customers, and Guillaume Verni, chef PC professional portables at Dell and specialist in the Latitude range.
Today, Dell is in third position on the global market for personal computers, behind Lenovo and HP, according to IDC.Its market share increased from 19.4 % in the first quarter of 2020 to 15.4 % in the first quarter of 2021.On the segment of laptops, whose sales have still jumped 55 % in the first quarter of 2021, Dell would also be in third position, behind Lenovo and HP.

KRISTEL DELNESSE - Laptops activity is mainly professional. It is Dell DNA at the base: to ensure that IT administrators have solid machines, easily manageable and especially the most secure possible, with agnostic values to have the most versatile machines possible.
Guillaume Verni - Our ranges range from latitude 3000 to latitude 9000, a new series launched last year. Our goal on the professional range part is to focus on the user experience. We notably launched Dell Optimizer, an automatic embedded software on the entire latitude range which goes, via artificial intelligence and machine learning, adapt the machine to the needs of each user.We have a module which analyzes the applications most used by each user and which accelerates the opening and "treatment" times of these applications.
Guillaume Verni - The Latitude 5000 range. This product is available in three slabs sizes: 13, 14 and 15 inch.Lately, we saw the 15 inch slightly increase in demand. In previous years, the 14th was more a standard.
LES NUMÉRIQUES – Comment a évolué récemment la demande en laptops professionnels par rapport aux desktops ou workstations ?Kristtel Delnesse-On the office automation part, we have a majority of laptops compared to fixed PCs: we are about 70-30.On the works market, the trend is almost equilibrian, or at least was so to COVID.Between the fixed PC and the Mobile PC, there is a very technical reason for this, it is that the fixed workstation will have much stronger scalability possibilities in terms of scalability and computing power, the number of processorsand available graphics cards… there are physical limits to the mobile part.We were on something fairly fair between the two, with a short majority for fixed PCs.Until the arrival of COVVID.Last year, we had an important shift to the mobile part, but also on the works part.
Kristel Delnesse - Today, an IT administrator wants machines on which he can do lasting and sustainable park management.Companies will look for machines that have good economic rational, flexibility, overall availability, H24 and 7/7 support. For French administrations and the public environment, there is also the concept of high availability, which is not necessarily true for a particular environment. If you are deprived of Netflix for two days, you get over it;On a professional environment, we are talking about a loss of net production if the person has no computer to work.More and more, we will also find in the professional world the environment green it, the aspect of eco-responsibility and even the societal engagement in a more important way.
Guillaume Verni - Companies also seek resistance to intensive use, much more than a consumer machine.Throughout our Latitude range, we do resistance tests, especially on the keyboard part. The keys are tested 10 million times, the clicks of the trackpad one million times, we do tests of a person who would overturn his coffee on his keyboard. There are also tests on the hinges, because we see that people sometimes carry their machine by the screen.Administrators also seek security, especially with the large number of companies affected by ransomware. Our Latitude range is protected by various features such as organic protection, Credential Cost, confidentiality filters integrated into the slabs of some of our products.
LES NUMÉRIQUES – Quels nouveaux critères de sélection des entreprises sont apparus depuis le début de la pandémie de Covid-19 ?Guillaume Verni - We saw a strong demand on mobility, the weight of the machines, their autonomy until last year, and since then it has changed a lot.We see a strong growth in the 15 -inch demand for equipping users with teleworking. It is very likely that companies are looking for 15 inch to try to "optimize" user productivity on a slightly larger screen.
Kristtel Delnesse - Definitely.Today, companies need to be able to equip their employees with good accessories to be comfortable in videoconferencing. It can be helmet, but also adapters type integrated speakers. There is also securing the webcam part.We have technical solutions that can respond to this, like isolate the webcam when we come out of videoconferencing. We also reflect in terms of screen, on how they can take the webcam-which itself will be on a pop-up with facial recognition-, Windows Hello, the soundbar, the direct team connection ifThe need. All with connectivity in USB type-C, by boarding the Ethernet also.We also see real reflections on what is going on today and what we are going to do tomorrow in terms of collaboration between the offices on one side and the teleworkers on the other. This is the collaborative aspect, ergonomics, prefabricated bundles, but also open and agnostic solutions that allow third -party solutions to be connected. All with large screens formats so that people in the office can interact directly with teleworkers, with cameras and all -embedded systems..
Guillaume Verni - On the audio aspect, Dell Optimizer incorporates a module on the latitude range called intelligent audio, which will reduce ambient noise. We also equip some machines with up to four microphones and four speakers to capture sound in all directions and restore it in the best possible quality. On the video part, we tend to generalize the resolution of Full HD webcams, as well as the reduction of image noise. In terms of confidentiality, wanting to protect yourself from potential webcam surveillance is a great demand from users. On our new latitude 9420 and 9520, we launched an automatic electromechanical shutter. It automatically closes as soon as the Zoom firm user, for example.
Kristtel Delnesse-The difference may be on the side of SMEs which have a few hundred positions. We will support them on the management of the park, management, deployment, management of their drivers, their images, or even integration into the Active Directory. This allows companies to deport the service at Dell so that they, in terms of complex services, can focus on value added tasks and come to capitalize on the things that we are able to do industriallyfactory.
