Wind power: 75 temporary layoffs during holidays at Marmen's in Trois-Rivières
As more and more people talk about green energy, the Trois-Rivières Marmen plant is forced to stop producing wind towers. Some 75 workers will be temporarily laid off during the holiday season.
The company explains this decision by two main factors. First, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant delays in the supply chain for the equipment required for wind tower manufacturing.
Then there's the situation with our neighbours to the south. The negotiations surrounding the adoption of the Biden plan in the United States are causing an overall slowdown in the wind market in North America. Order books are stagnating because promoters are waiting for the plan to be put in place to take advantage of advantageous terms.
Results: of the 150 employees, 75 were kept in the plant and the remaining 75 will be temporarily laid off for 6 to 8 weeks. The first wave of departure will take place in mid-November.
In a context of labour shortages, the company wants to avoid losing its expertise. Management promises a salary bonus to all assigned employees upon their return to work.
The wind turbine sector at the Trois-Rivières plant will be completely shut down for two months. A hundred sections of wind turbines will not be produced. This represents 10% of annual production.
