The takeover, the restructuring of Husqvarna and then the recent acquisition of Gas Gas, required additional investments. While sport, intimately linked to trade in the Austrian group whose motto remains “ready to race”, is at a standstill, we are necessarily experiencing this period in a tense way. The resumption of the international championships does not seem for tomorrow and the prospects do not appear glorious. "In every motorcycle discipline, from the MotoGP circuits to the Dakar tracks, including the stages of the greatest enduros and the circuits of the MXGP championship, the riders of the Austrian brand play the leading roles", explains Tom Jacobs. The “Motorsport” department of the KTM group (which includes KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas) employs 460 people based in 17 countries (Austria, USA, Italy, Holland, Spain and Belgium mainly), of which 58 are official riders (KTM: 28 pilots, Husqvarna: 22 pilots and GasGas: 8 pilots). “These figures do not include the various people working for suppliers, partners or subcontractors,” continues Tom, “to be able to resume racing, several factory teams are waiting for essential parts. By closing factories and/or borders around the world, the health crisis has also broken many supply chains which will also have to be restored to hope for a return to normal. For example, many suppliers are located in northern Italy, a region severely affected by the coronavirus and whose economy has been at an almost complete standstill for many weeks. The off-road part of Stefan Pierer's group has 185 employees at KTM and 75 at Husqvarna. There are 260 men and women who operate the group's racing department in motocross, enduro and rally raid. In total, the KTM Group employs more than 3,200 people. In a recent Speedweek interview, Pit Beirer said driver salaries will be renegotiated as soon as the new schedules are released. These would be relatively small pay cuts for the months of April, May and June. KTM Group employees will be content with 80% of their salary in the coming months to help the company overcome this difficult period.
