Payote espadrilles launch a manufacturing workshop in Perpignan
Five years that the Espadrilles Payote exist in Perpignan. Five years and some 150,000 pairs sold of this traditional handmade rope and canvas shoe, relaunched in Catalan lands by Olivier Gelly, but until now manufactured in the Basque Country, in Mauléon, by the Megam company.
For the year 2020, the small company announces a turnover of 1 million euros. It sources its canvas from Italy, France and Spain, and its jute fiber from Bangladesh. Olivier Gelly claims to be currently working on an alternative hemp rope with a workshop in Brive la Gaillard.
The workshop represents an investment of 60,000 euros, within the Polygone Nord space in Perpignan, and Olivier Gelly announces the creation of around twenty jobs by the end of 2021, which will join the 15 employees employed to date.
Festivals, rugby, Louvre
The brand could thus manufacture espadrilles in the colors of the music festival Les Déferlantes, in Argelès-sur-Mer. In the summer of 2020, it was the subject of a collaboration with the artist Corbineau who exhibited at the Louvre in Paris, with espadrilles made from recycled plastic fabric collected in the Mediterranean (in partnership with Seaqual).
Last fall, Payote launched a collection of lined espadrilles made from cotton fibers taken from used clothing. In 2019, the brand was the official manufacturer of the espadrille of the rugby union team on behalf of the French Rugby Federation.
One of Olivier Gelly's masterstrokes was to create the espadrille that smells good, in 2018, thanks to antibacterial microcapsules integrated into the canvas of the espadrilles, an initiative "which is a hit", according to the young leader.
