Fender American Original '60s Stratocaster fender guitar test (2018)
A decade in a stratocaster?
Like the Fender Telecaster '50s that we recently tested, the American original' 60s Stratocaster model is based on specifications of various stratocaster of the 1960s and not those of a particular model produced in 1960.The Stratocaster was born in 1954 and although it became the predilection instrument of some musicians such as Buddy Holly, it experienced a rather laborious start. It was not until the 1960s that the Stratocaster met success in the hands of various guitarists but especially between those of Jimi Hendrix.
Like all the instruments of the new American original series, the Stratocaster '60s is a kind of Pot-Pourri guitar from the 1960s and not strictly speaking a reissue. This is all the less the case since some sacrifices to modernity were made to the detriment of the historical veracity of the instrument. It is probably anecdotal since a reissue guitar will never be identical to a vintage guitar but we can ask the question of this choice.
A Stratocaster not quite sixties!
Once opened the black rigid case in which the guitar is delivered, some details allow us to guess the sixties character of this stratocaster.First, the mechanics are vintage -to -notch type, those which require cutting the end of the strings in order to insert them into the mechanics. Then, the 6 -point vibrato bridges are also vintage type. Finally, it is an intermediate fender logo that adorns the head of the guitar.I think you will agree that these details are relatively minor outside the vibrato punctures.
From the point of view of violin and finishes, this stratocaster is perfect. The Candy Apple Red Nitrocellulosic finish is impeccable and goes very well with the very light mint Green of the pickguard. In search of the vibrato rod, I open the elegant pocket that accompanies the guitar and in which is the certificate of authenticity as well as a hair cover.Accessory a bit outdated, it is quite rare to see a guitarist playing a stratocaster equipped with his hair cover essentially because it prevents the strings with the right hand with the right hand. But the fact is that for almost twenty years, the stratocaster was sold with this removable accessory.

The grip is unsurprisingly.Lightness and comfort, we find everything we like to stratocaster. The contact on the back of the handle is most pleasant as the applied varnish is fine. The maple handle surmounted by a rosewood button has a C profile qualified as thick but I don't really see why. This handle is far from being a "log" and I find it rather fine but it is probably quite subjective you will tell me.As with all the instruments of the American Original range, the Radius of the key is 9.5 "To the detriment of the historical reality of the instruments of that time whose radius was 7.25 ".It is one of the concessions to Fender's modernity for this original American 60s Stratocaster.Anyway, this round is rather comfortable to play.
The other concession concerns the guitar electronics. The three vintage pure microphones '65 are controlled by a 5 -position selector. We all know this selector who is the one who equips the all-new Stratocaster. It is all the same a small historical sprain since until 1977, the Fender Stratocaster were equipped with a 3 -position selector that the guitarists were trying to balance on the intermediate positions to obtain these soundswho have largely contributed to defining the stratocaster sound.Suddenly, we understand better why the 5 -position selector's choice was indisputable.
Intermediate sounds not quite usual.
The typical sounds of the stratocaster are there but as for the '50S Telecaster, the general rendering seemed a little polite! If the microphone and the central microphone are perfectly in the mind that I expected, the snake microphone, it surprised me somewhat by a sound full than the lambda strato. The policed side that I mentioned is above all obvious on the intermediate positions which are less dug and more brilliant than I was used to hearing on the various stratocaster that I was able to play over time.
It is a guitar that needs to be a little "jostled" without my being able to determine if it comes from pure vintage microphones '65 or rather something that happens at the level of the vibrato. The latter is very well settled in the floating position and holds the agreement very well. However, I wonder if the fact that it is only held by 3 springs does not give this slightly sweet character to the guitar.I had no additional springs on hand to test that but there may be something on this side.
Conclusion
Without being disappointing, this original American '60s Stratocaster left me a little hungry, essentially because of its sounds in the intermediate positions. But rest assured, this stratocaster is a good guitar which, by the shine of its sounds, will probably seduce Dick Dale lovers than those of Jimi Hendrix. There is no doubt that she will have her aficionados.
