The influx of solar energy on the network causes a collapse of its price.

In order to encourage the installation of solar panels in individuals, the government massively subsidizes electricity prices sold to EDF.Each kilowatt-hour produced by an owner saves him between 9.52 and 17.19 cents. These income is guaranteed for twenty years, not to mention local aid for installation.Result: the total capacity of the French solar park now exceeds 10 GW, and should still double by 2023, plans RTE.
Local and decarbonized electricity is a good way to fulfill our objectives in terms of greenhouse gas reduction.Except that all this additional energy is actually not really useful to us.Worse: it could cause a crash of the whole sector, warns the MIT Technology Review.

Prices on the wholesale electricity market, as shown in a report of the Think Tank Breakthrough Institute on California."Between 2014 and 2020, the value of solar energy fell by approximately 37% compared to other sources of electricity production," said the authors.
Negative price
In spring, deflation can reach 50% and prices go negative.Until now, the loss of value has been roughly offset by falling the cost of photovoltaic modules (-90% between 2010 and 2019).But this racing race may end badly."It will become more and more difficult to convince promoters and investors to build ever more solar power plants if they earn less money or even if they lose them," alerts the MIT.
"California gives an overview of what awaits the rest of the world while we are witnessing a spectacular increase in solar energy," warns Zeke Hausfather, the author of the report. With 19% of electricity production from solar energy, California is today far ahead of France (2.5%).But, with us too, this part is constantly increasing.Italy and Germany are already 8.6% respectively and 7.9%.

Only investors may not have the patience to wait. The public authorities will then face a dilemma: further increase subsidies, at the risk of exacerbating the problem, finding other less fluctuating decarbonized energies or imposing them, and too bad for the profits of promoters.
