Statkraft will pay $ 2.7 million to Solaraid for the deployment of solar energy in sub -Saharan Africa
(Ecofin Agency) - The deployment of renewable energies in South Africa to achieve climate objectives is supported by several actors, including NGOs. The charity organization SolarAid has just received aid from Statkraft to finance the deployment of solar energy in Africa.
European renewable energy developer Statkraft plans to support the efforts of international charity SolarAid to deploy solar power in Africa. Statkraft will donate $2.7 million in cash and materials over the next three years to fight energy poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.
The goal is to participate in efforts to ensure that all homes, schools and healthcare facilities have access to energy by 2030. According to Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, CEO of Statkraft, solar energy is a simple and cost effective solution. The funds and equipment will go to areas and households that currently rely on expensive, hazardous lighting sources such as candles and kerosene.
In health centres, the grant can help healthcare workers store vaccines such as the Covid-19 vaccine in solar-powered refrigerators for safe administration.
According to Statkraft, 548 million people in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to reliable electricity. The International Energy Agency predicts that number will rise to 630 million by 2030 due to the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the continent.

The European company's donation comes after Statkraft acquired Solarcentury, a renewable energy company and founder of SolarAid. It is part of Statkraft's efforts to support progress towards achieving UN Development Goal 7.
