Lyon: Public lighting soon cut at night for the good of animals and plants?
The ecologists do not forget to apply their program and three deliberations will be submitted to the vote concerning the ecological transition. Thus, the City of Lyon will join the SPL Oser, based in Grenoble and initiated by the Greens in the region. The latter specializes in the energy renovation of buildings. However, the municipality has a park of 2 million m2 of heated buildings. To achieve the objective of carbon neutrality, the assistant Sylvain Godinot estimates that it will be necessary to renovate 35 buildings per mandate.
The other two deliberations will concern the renovation of urban and public lighting. "We want to offer a more peaceful night in Lyon", continued the deputy in charge of Ecological Transition. The City of Lyon will therefore look into reducing the light in certain residential sectors when no car is passing in the street. An intelligent system capturing the passages of motorists, requiring an investment of 2.5 million euros, would be deployed in a few districts, but not in the Presqu'île.

Finally, the reduction in the intensity of the lighting, or even its total shutdown after a certain time of the evening, is being studied to create "a dark frame". It would join the green and blue wefts of the Lyon conurbation and would take into account "the needs of biodiversity, animals and plants, which need periods of dormancy", according to Sylvain Godinot. Its services and those of the Métropole are therefore in the process of defining areas that will have to be darker, in particular parks and gardens. Places that could end up in complete darkness to the delight of squirrels.
What about insecurity, or at least the feeling of insecurity generated by wandering down a dark street? Grégory Doucet's assistant assures him, the police services have been consulted and this will not pose any problem.
