In Corsica, the fire stations will produce solar electricity

The firefighters of Corse du Sud will equip their 20 barracks with photovoltaic panels and produce solar energy from 2022, announced the departmental fire and rescue service.

"We will be the first SDIS in France to equip all our barracks with photovoltaic panels", rejoiced Pierre Poli, president of the fire and rescue service of Corse-du-Sud.

This operation has a dual purpose for Corsican firefighters: "To actively participate in the ecological transition and at the same time create shelters for vehicles", in order to reduce maintenance costs, explained Mr. Poli, specifying that in addition to the roofs, large photovoltaic shade houses will be built for this purpose.

"Financially, the operation will be white for the SDIS," he said. The 3 million euros necessary for the installation and maintenance of these panels will be borne by the company Corsica Solequi, an independent energy producer which will then be responsible for marketing the electricity produced and will pay a fee of 20,000 euros. annually at the SDIS for 20 years.

The annual production of a village of 3600 inhabitants

After this period, the installations will become the property of the SDIS. The 3 MW of energy produced represents the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of a village of 3,600 inhabitants. Work should begin quickly in the first three barracks, in Porto-Vecchio and Ajaccio in particular, with the commissioning of the first panels scheduled for 2022.

The rest of the barracks should be equipped by 2025. "We are planning to equip our barracks in a second step so that the panels can provide hot water and why not energy" for the buildings themselves -even, added Mr. Poli.
