Chronicle Renewable Energies and Agriculture in West Africa on September 1, 2021
Back on the news of renewable energies in West Africa! It is clear that the projects are jostling this week and are counting in number: we find the creation of a future solar central, the start of a solar kits manufacturing plant, the establishment of several solar pumps, theUse of solar energy to operate hospitals ... and so on!No less than six countries are affected by this news: Benin, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.Let's see it more closely.
100 MW soon available for Ghana and Nigeria?
Investments in renewable energies in Africa abound!Indeed, the investment company of the CDC group specializing in the financing of electrical networks, gridworks Development Partners, and the South African investment company, New GX, announced last Thursday a new financing of $ 40 million to the companySouth African Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS).This new contribution will extend the activities of the company in Ghana and Nigeria.SPS has already installed 45 MW of solar energy and more than 15 MW of battery storage, with this new funding the company aims to build an additional 100 MW."Funding will allow SPS to offer cleaner and cheaper solar energy to a larger number of companies in sub-Saharan Africa," read the gridworks press release.
Solar energy will quickly illuminate around thirty hospitals in Benin and Nigeria
The Shell Foundation and the Powering Health platform of Odyssey Energy Solutions have selected three companies to install photovoltaic systems in health centers in Benin and Nigeria. These companies were chosen for their experiences in photovoltaic solar energy and their ability to carry out work on a time of 3 to 10 months.Note that the initiative is supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and co -financed by the British government.
More specifically, ARES, based in Cotonou, will install solar systems out of networks in 15 hospitals in Benin. In Nigeria, Havenhill Synergy will produce solar energy for 15 Oyo State clinics, and the American Windgen Power will provide energy at the Bubwa hospital in Abuja.
A new factory for manufacturing solar kits and training workshops in Benin
It's historic! The supplier of French solar equipment Lagazel formalizes a unit for manufacturing lamps, solar kits and collective load stations in Porto-Novo.The company has already started to manufacture "Made in Benin" equipment since July.Following the formalization, an order of 4 stations and 180 solar lamps has already been carried out towards Togo and a solar lamp load station was installed at the Djabala school, in the Hills department.Note that this is not a test gallop for the company in the region, as Lagazel already has a manufacturing plant in Dédougou in Burkina Faso.
Green People’s Energy -The Initiative of the German Development Ministry - trained a dozen agricultural coaches for irrigation and solar refrigeration in Parakou, in the center of Benin. This 4 -day training workshop aims to develop the adoption of renewable energies in rural areas that are not connected to the national electrical network. Thus, each of the coaches has particular expertise in a different agricultural field: transformation of soybeans, shea butter, chicken farming or vegetable cultivation.
Recall that the Benin electrification rate is 36 %, only 19 % of rural households have electricity in 2018.A critical situation which leads the government to launch the rural electric project (PERU) last July and which concerns 209 localities.

A new solar pump secured by the gendarmerie in Mali
The Territorial Gendarmerie Brigade of Somadougou (Cercle de Mopti) has a new drilling of 10,000 liters of water operating on solar energy. The cost of the realization amounts to FCFA 165 million, funded by the United Nations Integrated Multidimensional Mission for Stabilization in Mali (MINUSMA) and the German trustee fund. This pump will also benefit civilian populations thanks to outdoor taps.
Solar energy reduces energy bills of manufacturers in Nigeria
The hybrid solar solution supplier, Daystar Power, puts into service an 800 kW solar energy system for UAC Foods, the UAC dairy subsidiary. This is a tailor-made installation on the roof of the UAC Dairies factory Ikeja. The objective of the UAC dairy subsidiary is to reduce its dependence to diesel generators whose fuel prices are constantly climbing.Indeed, this solar installation provides 50 % of diurnal consumption of the factory. At the same time, the factory has a lasting, reliable and inexpensive energy, while reaching its carbon footprint.Note that the rapprochement between Daystar Power and UAC Foods is the fruit of the Project Development Program (PDP) of the German Energy Solution Initiative implemented by GIZ.Definitely, Germany is very present in the renewable energies sector in West Africa.
A solar pump at the service of an aquaculture project, and Siemens is eyeing Senegal
Solar energy will soon eat fresh fish!In the villages of Santhiou Berra and Tella Yargouye, aquaculture works are being carried out as part of the fight against food and nutritional insecurity and the promotion of the employment of young people and women in the region.Concretely, in the village of Santhiou Berra, a hatching has an annual production capacity of one million Alevin with a value of FCFA 32 million, as for the village of Tella Yargouye, it has a fish farm7 ponds, or 800 m², worth FCFA 76 million. This farm is also equipped with a 30 m borehole and a solar pump.
The German energy company Siemens is interested in solar energy in Senegal ... The company reiterates its commitment to support the policy of industrialization of Senegal through renewable energies. To see how it is materialized in the coming weeks ... Let us recall that an interview had already been carried out last April on the government's program in terms of renewable energies and reduction of carbon emissions.Business.
A new solar power plant to come in Togo
This is a major project! The state will provide Gnassingbé Eyadema (Lomé) international airport with a photovoltaic solar power plant, a call for tenders was launched last Wednesday.Note that the airport is currently in full renovation, that the call for tenders does not mention the expected energy capacity of the future solar power plant, or even the delivery time.
A final information before completing this chronicle. The pan-African organization Energy Generation has just published a report: "Study on the strengths and weaknesses of the private sector in the field of energy in Togo" which is available by sending an email to contact@Energy-Generation.org.A very interesting study, we come back to it soon.
