A mega solar hydrogen plant planned for the port of Bordeaux
Driven by the energy transition, renewable hydrogen plant projects are flourishing. A powerful electrolyser should see the light of day north of Bordeaux. It will produce up to 14,000 tonnes of the precious gas each year.
As a symbol of transition, the Ambès green hydrogen plant will take place at the heart of a vast petrochemical zone. The 250 million euro project was approved by the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux at the end of April 2021. It is led by GH2, a young company which will sign its very first project. The start-up will erect an alkaline electrolyser with a power of 100 MW and two solar parks, the characteristics of which have not been disclosed. The site will be commissioned in 2025.
It aims to produce up to 14,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen each year, part of which will be used by companies located nearby and the other exported. A project that will prevent the release of 130,000 tons of CO2 annually according to the startup. The process must also generate ammonia, another compound widely used in industry.
Created in 2018, GH2 boasts several small green hydrogen production projects in France, Tunisia and Chile. It hopes to reach a portfolio of electrolyzers totaling 1 GW of power by 2025.
